"There were historically three distinct and fairly extensive districts having Coole (representing Irish Cuil, "a corner") as their initial element in Fermanagh.  One, a 'half-barony' lying to the northeast of Enniskillen in the present barony of Tirkennedy has its name preserved in Castlecoole, the former seat of the earls of Belmore.  Closely associated with this area was the family of Ó Cassidy -- known as Ua Caiside na Cuile -- hereditary physicians to the Maguires; memory of the association is preserved in the townland name of Ballycassidy, just north of Enniskillen."

Europe & Northern Ireland

At the western edge of Europe, Northern Ireland consists of six counties within Ireland's 32 counties, the remainder of which form the Republic of Ireland.

Ulster Province in the Gaelic Revival

This map depicts the leading learned families and their particular expertise during the Gaelic Revival.  (The names in red are of Scotish "galloglass" or mercenaries brought to Ireland by Irish kings.)  Beginning in the 12th century, Irish culture flowered for 300 years under the leadership of educated families who produced new works of poetry, legal commentaries, translations of European medical treaties and works of genealogy and Irish history.  Cassidys were located in Ulster, the northern province of Ireland, and, in particular, in County Fermanagh.

County Fermanagh

County Fermanagh is in the southwest corner of Northern Ireland and contains the great lake system of the Erne.  Lough Erne is 50 miles long and is joined to the Shannon-Erne Waterway, making it the longest navigable inland waterway in Europe.  Enniskillen is the principal city in the county.  See also full map of Co. Fermanagh.
