"There
were historically three distinct and fairly
extensive districts having Coole
(representing Irish Cuil, "a
corner") as their initial element
in Fermanagh. One, a 'half-barony'
lying to the northeast of Enniskillen
in the present barony of Tirkennedy has
its name preserved in Castlecoole,
the former seat of the earls of Belmore.
Closely associated with this area was
the family of Ó Cassidy -- known as Ua
Caiside na Cuile -- hereditary physicians
to the Maguires; memory of the association
is preserved in the townland name of Ballycassidy,
just north of Enniskillen."

Record (1984). See also John

Names of County Fermanagh to the Letters

Ulster
Province in the Gaelic Revival
|
|
|
|
This map depicts the leading learned families
and their particular expertise during the
Gaelic Revival. (The names in red
are of Scotish "galloglass" or
mercenaries brought to Ireland by Irish
kings.) Beginning in the 12th century,
Irish culture flowered for 300 years under
the leadership of educated families who
produced new works of poetry, legal commentaries,
translations of European medical treaties
and works of genealogy and Irish history.
Cassidys were located in Ulster, the northern
province of Ireland, and, in particular,
in County Fermanagh.
